The IB Diploma runs into the same pattern we already found with AP exams: the points total gets all the attention, but the real bar is which Higher Level subject you're holding, and at what grade. A "36-point offer" and a "36-point offer including HL7 Mathematics" are very different targets to prepare for, and most general IB guides collapse the two into one headline number.

Six real courses, six named HL subjects

Every figure below is quoted directly from that university's own course page, for six different universities:

  • University of Bristol, BSc Computer Science: 38 points overall with 18 at Higher Level, "including 7 at Higher Level in Mathematics." The points total alone doesn't tell you Bristol wants your single strongest HL grade specifically in Maths.
  • University of Warwick, BSc Mathematics: 39 points, "with 6 in three Higher Level subjects to include Mathematics ('Analysis and Approaches' only)" -- naming not just the subject but the specific IB Maths track, since the IB offers two (Analysis and Approaches vs. Applications and Interpretation) and Warwick will only accept one of them.
  • University of Manchester, BEng Chemical Engineering: 36 points overall with 6,6,6 at Higher Level, "including Mathematics and Chemistry or Physics" -- two named subjects, with a real choice on the second one.
  • University of Edinburgh, BEng Chemical Engineering: a published range from 37 points (666 at HL) down to 32 points (655 at HL) depending on the applicant's circumstances, but every tier requires "Mathematics (Analysis and approaches only) at 5" and "Chemistry at 5" specifically -- the named subjects don't move even when the overall points requirement does.
  • Imperial College London, BSc Mathematics: 39 points minimum (40 typical), "to include: 7 in Mathematics at higher level" -- the single highest named-subject grade we found in this set, a 7 out of 7 required specifically in Maths.
  • University of Nottingham, BSc Chemistry: an unusual dual-path structure -- either "26 points overall" or, alternatively, "IB Higher Level Certificates: 554 (or 644)" -- with HL5 in Chemistry required either way. Nottingham is the one school here that lets you qualify on Higher Level Certificates alone, without a full Diploma points total.

Mathematics is the repeat offender, same as with AP

Line these up and one subject dominates: four of the six courses above name Mathematics specifically, and two of those (Warwick, Edinburgh) go a step further and specify which IB Maths course counts -- Analysis and Approaches, not Applications and Interpretation. That mirrors what we found with APs, where Calculus BC (not AB) was the single most repeated named requirement across Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, King's, and Edinburgh. If you're choosing between the IB's two Maths tracks with a UK STEM or Economics-adjacent course in mind, Analysis and Approaches is the one that keeps showing up by name in official requirements -- Applications and Interpretation does not appear to satisfy it anywhere in this set.

What this means for you

  • Don't plan your IB subject choices around a points total alone -- read the actual course page for the named HL subject and grade; "36 points" and "36 points including HL6 Mathematics" are different bars to clear.
  • If your course is STEM, Economics, or Engineering-adjacent, expect Mathematics to be named specifically -- and expect Analysis and Approaches, not Applications and Interpretation, to be the version that counts.
  • The named subject can stay fixed even when the points total moves -- Edinburgh's Chemical Engineering range drops from 37 to 32 points across its access routes, but Mathematics and Chemistry at grade 5 are required at every tier.
  • A points-total-only requirement without a named subject is real, but rarer -- Nottingham's Chemistry course is the outlier here in taking Higher Level Certificates alone; most competitive courses expect the full Diploma plus a named HL subject.
