"How many AP exams" is the wrong first question at most of the UK universities in our own dataset. The real requirement almost always names which AP subjects count, not just a count -- and that named list changes course by course, sometimes even between two closely related degrees at the same school. This is the "which subject" half of our broader piece on how many AP exams UK universities actually ask for.

Edinburgh: a different AP add-on for nearly every department

University of Edinburgh layers a subject-specific AP requirement on top of its university-wide floor for almost every course we checked, and the specific subject tracks the degree closely:

  • Law LLB: AP English Language and Composition, or AP English Literature and Composition, at grade 4+.
  • English Literature MA: AP English Literature and Composition specifically at 4+ -- not the either/or option Law gets.
  • Biological Sciences BSc: Biology and Chemistry, plus either a B in A-level Physics or AP Physics at grade 3 -- a real subject combination, not a single AP score standing in for the whole requirement.
  • Geography BSc: Mathematics/Calculus required at grade A (equivalent to AP 4) or grade B (AP 3), depending on the specific programme within the school.
  • Psychology BSc: AP Calculus at 4, or AP Precalculus at 4 plus one further science/math AP at 4 -- a genuine two-route structure built around which math course you actually took.

Compare Computer Science (AP Calculus at 4) against Computer Science and Mathematics, its own joint-degree sibling (AP Calculus at 5) -- same department, same general course family, different required score, because the joint degree leans harder on the math half.

Imperial: the named subjects get very specific, very fast

Imperial College London doesn't just name a subject -- it often names an exact exam variant. Its Physics BSc page requires Calculus BC and Physics C specifically (not just "a physics AP"), plus one further qualifying subject. Chemistry BSc names Chemistry and Calculus BC by name, plus one of Biology, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, or Physics C. Medicine MBBS/BSc is the most granular case in our dataset: 5 AP exams at 5,5,5,5,4, with grade 5 specifically required in Biology, grade 5 specifically required in Chemistry, and grade 5 in either Calculus BC or a relevant science subject -- three of the five slots are locked to a named subject, not left open.

Electrical and Electronic Engineering MEng asks for Calculus BC and both AP Physics C exams (Physics C: Mechanics and Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism count separately) -- a real, more specific bar than Civil Engineering MEng's own page, which asks for Calculus BC and Physics C without specifying both halves.

King's College London: one named exam decides your route

King's College London's own Route 1 US-applicant table sets a school-wide SAT/ACT band by A-level grade tier, but two of its courses layer a single, named requirement on top: Mathematics BSc and Accounting & Finance BSc both state that their Mathematics subject requirement specifically requires AP Calculus BC -- not Calculus AB, and not "a calculus AP" generically.

What this means for you

  • Don't plan your AP schedule around a subject count alone -- read the actual course page for the named subjects, since "3 AP exams" and "3 AP exams including Calculus BC and Chemistry" are very different requirements to prepare for.
  • AP Calculus BC, specifically, is the single most repeated named requirement in our dataset -- it shows up by name at Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, King's, and Edinburgh, almost always for STEM and Economics-adjacent courses, and AB alone doesn't appear to satisfy it anywhere we found it stated.
  • A joint degree can require a higher score in the same named subject than its single-honours sibling -- Edinburgh's Computer Science and Mathematics BSc wants Calculus at 5 where plain Computer Science only wants a 4.
  • Where a subject list is genuinely open ("one of Biology/Chemistry/Physics"), that flexibility is real and worth using strategically -- pick the AP you're strongest in rather than assuming you need all of the listed options.
  • The IB Diploma runs on the exact same pattern -- a named Higher Level subject, not just a points total. See why your UK university wants a specific IB Higher Level subject for the IB-side version of this same finding.
