A lot of US applicant advice treats "AP score of 5" as the unstated assumption behind every UK university's testing bar. Our own course-by-course data shows that's genuinely wrong for a meaningful share of schools -- some of the UK's most-applied-to universities publish a real, official AP threshold of 4, not 5, and one runs its entire American-applicant system around it. This sits alongside our broader look at how many AP exams UK universities actually ask for as the "which score" half of that question.

Edinburgh's whole system runs on a 4

University of Edinburgh is the clearest case in our dataset. Its university-wide US-applicant floor is SAT 1290+ (650+ EBRW, 620+ Math) or ACT 27+, plus just 2 AP scores at grade 4+ -- confirmed identically across both its general USA country page and its CAHSS (arts/humanities/social sciences) page. Layered on top, course-specific add-ons mostly ask for a 4, not a 5: Computer Science wants AP Calculus at 4, Chemistry wants AP Calculus at 4, Chemical Engineering wants AP Calculus at 4 plus Chemistry, and Physics wants AP Calculus at 4 plus Physics. A handful of joint programmes step up to a 5 -- Computer Science and Mathematics, plain Mathematics, and Electronics and Computer Science all specifically require AP Calculus at 5 -- a real, documented distinction between a single-subject degree and its more math-intensive joint version.

Edinburgh's Business School goes lower still: its Business Management, Accounting and Finance, and related degrees accept AP Calculus at 3+, or AP Precalculus at 4+, or an ACT Math score of 27+, or an SAT Math score of 675+ -- four separate qualifying paths, none of which requires a 5. Nursing Studies has its own lower math route again: AP Calculus or Precalculus at grade 3+, ACT Math 25+, or SAT Math 650+.

LSE's lower band doesn't need a single 5 at grade 5 across the board

London School of Economics's Law LLB page publishes two real offer bands side by side: the most competitive band wants 5 AP exams at grade 5, but a documented "lower offer band" accepts 3 APs at grade 5 plus 2 more at grade 4 -- two of your five exam scores can be a 4, not a 5, and still qualify.

Even Imperial and Oxford's "5 APs" routes aren't always five 5s

Imperial College London states several of its 5-AP routes as a mixed-score combination, not five perfect scores. Its Medicine MBBS/BSc page asks for 5 APs at 5,5,5,5,4 -- one 4 is built into the requirement. Chemistry BSc, Biochemistry BSc, and Materials Science and Engineering BEng all publish the identical shape: 5 APs at 5,5,5,4,4, two of the five allowed to land at 4. Even the reduced 3-AP-plus-test route for these same courses drops to a 5,5,4 combination, not three flat 5s.

What this means for you

  • Don't assume "AP requirement" automatically means grade 5 -- Edinburgh's entire system, LSE's lower band, and several of Imperial's named courses build a 4 into the real, official minimum.
  • If your AP scores are strong but not perfect, Edinburgh is worth a specific look -- a 2x AP-4+ floor plus a competitive SAT/ACT is a genuinely different bar than the 5-APs-at-5 standard several other top UK universities publish.
  • A published "5 AP exams" figure can still include a 4 inside it -- read the specific score combination stated on the course's own page, not just the exam count, before assuming every score needs to be a 5.
  • Business, Accounting, and Nursing degrees tend to run the most flexible AP-score routes -- Edinburgh's own Business School and Nursing pages both publish multiple qualifying paths below a straight AP-5 standard.
